FRED26 Children's Downhill Bike

Sturdy aluminium frame with Horst-Link rear suspension and downhill geometry

The robust yet lightweight Fred frame, made from 6061 aluminium, has been specially developed for young downhill riders and freeriders: with tube dimensions suitable for children, a relatively low weight and an extra-robust construction for uncompromising downhill performance. The modern downhill geometry, with a flat 63° head angle and low bottom bracket, combined with the Horst-Link rear suspension system, ensures responsive handling, optimum traction and a smooth ride over rough terrain. The decoupled braking and suspension movement allows technical trails to be tackled with greater control and efficiency.

Downhill-optimised cockpit

The stem and handlebars, featuring a 25mm rise, are from Reverse Components; they are lightweight and robust, ensuring safe and controlled handling on fast, technical descents and big jumps. Shifting is handled by a smooth-operating SRAM NX trigger lever, whilst braking is provided by the reliable Magura MT Trail Sport 4-piston disc brake with 180/180 mm rotors. The 1-finger HC aluminium brake levers can be perfectly adjusted to fit smaller children’s hands and offer precise control and maximum braking power with minimal effort.

Smooth-shifting gearbox with a wide gear ratio range

With the high-quality SRAM NX rear derailleur, young riders can change gears precisely, smoothly and reliably, whatever the terrain. Thanks to 11 gears and a wide gear range, even short uphill sections can be tackled with ease, and the fun of riding never falls by the wayside.

A child-friendly crank. Powerful and sturdy.

We have specifically tailored the lightweight and robust VPACE SL children’s crankset to the anatomy of young riders. With a Q-factor of 150 mm, it allows for a natural leg position, resulting in greater pedalling efficiency and noticeably better power transfer. Thanks to the 3-hole direct mount, changing the chainring is a matter of seconds. The e*thirteen chain guide with bashguard ensures that the chain stays where it belongs, even at high speeds, and that no teeth are lost.

Scope of application

The Fred Children’s Downhill Fully is a Category 5 mountain bike and is therefore suitable for technically demanding terrain, rough, rocky trails and use in bike parks. Jumps and drops of up to a maximum height of 122 cm may be encountered. Due to the higher levels of stress involved, bikes in this category should be serviced regularly and checked for damage. The FRED26 children’s bike has been designed for a rider weight of up to 50 kg.

Due to the greater stresses involved, bikes in this category must be thoroughly checked for any damage after every ride.

Our children’s bikes can be ridden for two years from the start of the recommended size range and accommodate a growth of approximately 15 cm. Once the seat post and stem have been adjusted, this can be extended to 20 cm.

The perfect size

The chart shows a recommendation based on body height. However, depending on your riding style, body proportions or personal preferences, a smaller or larger model may also be suitable. Simple adjustments, such as a longer or shorter stem, a different seatpost or the position of the saddle, allow you to tailor the bike perfectly to your needs.

Your bike will arrive in a box, fully pre-assembled, perfectly adjusted and ready to go. All you need to do is take the bike out of the box and carry out the following final assembly steps yourself:

  1. Straighten the handlebars
  2. Fit the front wheel
  3. Adjust the saddle to the correct height
  4. Screw on the pedals
The right frame size depends primarily on height and inseam. To do this, measure your child’s height without shoes and determine their inseam (inside leg length)

1. Measure height

To determine height, have your child stand barefoot, upright with their back against a wall. Now place a book horizontally on their head and measure the distance from the floor to the bottom edge of the book.

2. Measure the inseam

To determine the inseam, have your child stand barefoot, upright with their back against a wall, clamp a book between their legs and pull it upwards into their crotch with the top edge horizontal. Now measure the distance from the floor to the top edge of the book. The length you’ve measured is your child’s inseam.

3. Determining the right bike size / frame size

As well as height, inseam length also plays an important role in determining the right bike size/frame size. To ensure your child can ride safely, their inseam length should be at least equal to the standover height of the selected size.
